Moon palace accompanies Marco Stanley Fogg through a few extraordinary and very eventful years of his life. He runs out of funds, loses his apartment and spends some time homeless in Central Park until a beautiful Chinese girl comes to his rescue. He then finds employment as the live-in companion and sparring partner of an old man, who himself has a remarkable tale to tell, and ends up on an expedition through the Amirican West. Along the way, he encounters his grandfather and then father through a series of coincidences on his quest to find his own identity. All of these events are put into the context of modern American history, and the moon is a constant companion and guide throughout the novel.
